Asus ZenBook UM431DLaptop keeps getting stuck in automatic repair loop
A few months ago, my laptop started occasionally getting stuck in an automatic repair loop. I was usually able to get out of it using some combination of system restore, uninstalling updates, and just turning it off and letting it sit overnight. I have no idea which of those was the solution but it worked. Then about a month ago, it got stuck and nothing would work. I eventually used a boot USB to get into the hard drive and transfer my files off, then reinstalled Windows 10 via USB. I figured that would fix it as I thought the cause was an update that got half installed before my laptop died.
Last night, I left my laptop closed and plugged in (but not powered down) for a few hours and when I came back, it had brought up the automatic repair screen again and nothing so far has worked to get back into Windows. Seeing as I completely reinstalled Windows 10, I no longer think it it's just an issue with my copy of windows and instead either the windows updates themselves don't work with my laptop, or there's a hardware issue. I can get back in the same way I did before, but it's a pain in the ass. Ideally I'd like to prevent this from happening in the future. How would I go about this? Is it even worth it or would it be cheaper/easier to take it to a repair shop?

I was able to manually update the laptop so there are no updates pending, but when restarted it still does not want to boot into Windows properly. I think that narrows it down to a hardware issue. How do I figure out what the issue is so I can fix it?

Please expand on what you mean by "....still does not want to boot into Windows properly."?
Does it boot fully into Windows safe mode OK?
jayeff tarafından
@jayeff It will usually boot into safe mode if I select it in the startup repair menu, though the time I had to reinstall Windows it wouldn't boot into safe mode and eventually wouldn't even open the startup repair menu. Also in the time between my first post and yesterday's comment, I was able to boot into windows and use it with no problems for a couple weeks, keeping it in sleep mode when not using it. The only other issue I've noticed is sometimes the headphone jack stops working, but if I can get the computer to restart it will fix that.

Hey there @annaliesep ,
I know my answer is not going to be very helpful but I HAD to comment: I have been having for quite some time the EXACT SAME issue with my laptop, which is the EXACT SAME model as yours... Could this point to a broader issue of compatibility between Windows and this laptop model? Or maybe a generic hardware issue with this line of models? Hard to say... In any case, the only small difference with you is that I think I had yet to not be able to boot in Safe Mode.
Did you find by chance a solution to the issue?
Good luck!

@yugoboss No, unfortunately I don't have an actual solution. One thing I did do was realize Windows Update kept trying and failing to install the same update, which was why it kept restarting and getting stuck in automatic repair. I manually downloaded and installed the update and that at least stopped it from restarting regularly. I also paused updates for 35 days and kept the laptop in sleep mode when I wasn't using it so it wouldn't restart on its own. That 35 days is over and it still won't boot back into Windows after an automatic update, but they usually happen at night so I just shut it off and leave it overnight and it usually boots fine in the morning. So essentially, my "solution" is to minimize the number of restarts as much as possible.
The fact that both of us have the same issue with the same laptop does make it seem like it's either hardware failure or an inherent compatibility issue. Did you also start having issues around Nov 2024? We might be able to narrow down the update that did it.
